The key to the consistent high qualiry of the wines of the Tommaso Bussola estate is the age of the vines and the fact that the estate uses naturally low-yielding ancient clones of the varieties used. The Valpolicella Classico Superiore is a blend of 40% Corvinone, 25% Corvina Grossa, 20% Rondinella, Molinara and small percentages of old vine Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Dindarella and Pindara round out the blend, along with new experiments like Teroldego. The Corvinone grape, in particular, is quite rare today because of its low yields and finicky growing habits. Tommaso claims it is the Corvinone that gives his wines their depth. He calls it the “Super Corvina,” saying that it produces stronger, denser, richer, more perfumed wines.

Rich, concentrated flavors of date, baked cherry, wild sage and espresso crema are enlivened by tangy acidity in this layered, medium-bodied red, with fine-grained tannins defining the smoke-tinged finish. Drink now through 2025. 800 cases made. Alison Napjus.

Vinous: 89 Points

The 2014 Valpolicella Classico Superiore TB lifts up with an intense and spicy display yet remains wonderfully fresh, showing crushed cherries and musky plums complemented by notes of clove, allspice and molasses. It’s savory and textural within, seeming almost salty at times, showing tart wild berries, sour citrus and inner herbal tones carried by brisk acids. This finishes incredibly long and bitter, with tart fruits and balsamic tones lingering. The 2014 shows the difficult vintage but in a way that gives it a more grounded feel than the heady 2015 tasted beside it.
