In 2022 the Clos du Val winery will celebrate its 50th anniversary as a benchmark producer in Napa Valley. As a participant in the famed 1976 Judgement of Paris, Clos du Val became an iconic producer that continues to produce classically styled, Bordeaux inspired wines that impress for thier balance and longevity. In that tasting Clos du Val placed eight. Ten year lateer the French judges demanded a rematch. They argued that the result had been a fluke, as anyone could make a good wine that lasts a few years, but only the French could make a wine that would age with finesse. In that tasting in 1986 Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon came in first.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon bottling consists of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec. The wine aged for 19 months in 58% new oak.

Decanter: 97 Points

Polished aromas of lovely ripe dark fruit and chocolatey spicy oak, with floral and herbal notes. An expressive and fresh palate with purity of fruit, juicy tannins, and a solid length. Approachable now and will age well. Decanter World Wine Awards, 10/2020.

Wine Spectator: 92 Points

Juicy and dense, with a core of steeped plum and blackberry fruit flavors backed by loam and roasted applewood notes. The finish has a nice kick of fruit and a flash of violet. Drink now through 2032. 6,971 cases made. James Molesworth, 3/31/2022.

Vinous: 91 Points

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a gorgeous entry-level wine from Clos du Val. Sensual and so inviting, the 2018 will be a real pleasure to drink right out of the gate. Inky dark fruit, grilled herbs, graphite and lavender open effortlessly in the glass, all framed by silky, poised tannins. 2/2021.

Wine Advocate: 90 Points

Composed of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate sports a deep garnet-purple color, offering open-knit, fragrant notions of warm cassis, blackberry pie and boysenberries plus touches of clove oil, dark chocolate and violets. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is laden with ripe, juicy black fruit, supported by ripe, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing on a floral note. Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 11/2020.

James Suckling

Lots of dried blackcurrant, dark chocolate and walnut on the nose. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, fine tannins. Flavorful finish. 1/2021.
