On the nose there are aromas of red fruits, almond and hazelnut, with a just faint vanilla aroma. The wine is smootth, even silky balanced between the fruityness and acidity and tannins. The red fruit flavors combine with hints of liquorice and toasted notes, and an elegant finish .
51% Merlot and 49% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Having acquired Château des Combes in 1858, our family settles in the small hamlet of Hourc, a commune of Ladaux, itself a small village in the heart of Entre-Deux-Mers, to the south east of Bordeaux. Pierre Ducourt, then his children and his grand-children tend to several hectares of vines that belong to the estate. The arrival of our grandfather, Henri Ducourt, at the property marks an important turning point for the business. He, with the help of his three children (Marie Christine, Philippe and Bernard), is to drastically revitalise the company and turn this family vineyard into one of Bordeaux’s largest winemaking unities, with 480 hectares (about 1200 acres) and 14 chateaus in 6 different appellations controlées.
Marie-Christine, the daughter of Henri Ducourt, purchased this prestigious left-bank property in 1979, which lies on the border of the Graves appellation. The 60-hectare (about 150 acre) vineyard was rapidly replanted and the château building, which dates from 1348, was restored. Our family now produces three different-coloured wines there: red, white and rosé.
Firmly tannic with a dusty texture, this wine is also rich in spicy black fruits and balanced with acidity. It has plenty of potential, with rich tannins and good acidity at the end. Drink from 2021. Roger Voss, 12/31/2018.
