17.5 out of 20 points, Jancis Robinson

Made by Borie and bottled by Cazes (ownership of this property transferred from the Borie family to the Cazes family in 2017). Never released en primeur. Tasted blind. First bottle oxidised. Second bottle: Smooth and very polished. Drawing-room wine. Polished to within an inch of its life – very effectively! Attractive stuff for relatively early drinking. Drink 2025 – 2040. Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, February 2020

This estate has been a part of Batailley until the property was split in two in the 1940's. Until 2016 this Chateau was owned by the Aunt of Grand Puy Lacoste proprietor Xavier Borie who made the wine for her. The 40 hectare property has just under 55 acres of vines. The property was recently sold to the Cazes family of neighbouring Lynch Bages and thus the 2016 vintage has the unique distinction of being a sort of collaboration between two great Bordeaux winemaking families. The vintage was harvested and vinified by the Borie family of Grand-Puy-Lacoste, but the Cazes family of Lynch Bages completed the elevage after purchasing the estate in March of 2017.

Château Haut-Batailley Description

A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot.

Vinous: 94 Points

The 2016 Haut-Batailley was tasted from two bottles, the first showing a touch of TCA. The second has an airy and well-defined bouquet of blackberry, graphite and subtle floral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins and very classic in style, displaying impressive grip. I appreciate the substance toward the finish, and the pencil lead lingering on the aftertaste. This is an outstanding Haut-Batailley. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting. Drinking Window: 2022 - 2042. Neal Martin, 1/2020.

James Suckling: 94 Points

The blackcurrants and blueberries with violets on the nose are fascinating. Full-bodied and very tightly wound with gorgeous tannins and a linear and bright finish. Needs two to four years to come together. Try after 2023.James Suckling, 1/2019.

Wine Advocate: 92+ Points

The 2016 Haut Batailley has a deep garnet-purple color and aromas of baked redcurrants, red plums and cassis with asphalt, fried herbs and earth. The palate is medium-bodied, firm and chewy with an earthy finish. 2019 - 2033. Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, 11/2018.

Jeb Dunnuck: 92 Points

This estate hit a home run with their 2016 Château Haut-Batailley. This medium to full-bodied beauty oozes classic Pauillac notes of dried tobacco, new saddle leather, and earthy, spicy dark fruits. Nicely concentrated, perfectly balanced, and with building tannins, it has enough elegance and purity to offer pleasure even today, yet it’s going to keep for two decades or more. It’s well worth seeking out. Drink 2019 - 2039. Jeb Dunnuck, 2/2019.
