A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon with an average of age of the vines about 50 years.
With its high percentage of Merlot Chateau Coufran has been called the Pomerol of Medoc.
The Chateau Coufran dates back to the mid-1700s. The vineyard gained recognition at to the end of the 18th century when it was owned by Baron Hector de Brane, who created Chateau Brane Mouton, which is now known as Chateau Mouton Rothschild.
In 1924 the property was purchased by the Miailhe family. They started to replant the estate predominately with Merlot in the 1930 due to problems to get the late maturing Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen year after year. The Miailhe family has been active in Bordeaux since 1793 as negotiants and as owners of several chateaux. At one time, they were owners of Chateau Pichon Lalande in Pauillac, and in the Margaux appellation, they own both Chateau Palmer and Chateau Siran.
It is interesting that it was the Miailhe family who was responsible for planting the preponderance of Merlot in all three of their previously named vineyards.
Black cherry, walnut, mocha and dried earth on the nose. Some iodine, too. It's medium- to full-bodied with fine-grained tannins. Soft and flavorful. Ripe and the end. 85% merlot and 15% cabernet sauvignon. Try after 2023.
Cellar Selection
Unusually for the Médoc, this wine is packed with Merlot, with just a light addition of Cabernet Sauvignon. That gives richness, still firm tannins and a jammy black-fruit character. Full, ripe and juicy, the wine will likely be ready from 2024. Roger Voss, 3/1/2021.
A Merlot-dominat wine from clay-limestone soils in St.-Saurin-de-Cadourne, owned by the Miailhe family. Touches of vanilla smoke on the aromatics show an oak influence, with a dominance of red fruits. Needs another few years to soften, with plenty of promise. Jane Anson, Drinking window 2022-2032, 9/11/2020.
Deep garnet-purple, the 2018 Coufran is a little broody to begin, giving way to pronounced notes of smoked meats, fertile loam, truffles and tapenade over a core of Black Forest cake, warm cassis and blackberry pie. Full, rich and decadently fruited in the mouth, it has a firm, grainy frame and just enough freshness, finishing long and savory.
