2019 Chateau Croix Mouton

This chateau was previously known as Chateau Mouton and has a long history in the Bordeaux region. The property was mentioned in the 1881 Ferret edition, next to many well-known Bordeaux wine producers of the time. However, the estate has a much longer history dating back to the ancient Romans who planted vines on the property thousands of years ago. The Gallo-Romains remains found in their vineyards are proof of an ancient Bordeaux wine-producing past.

The Chateau Croix Mouton was purchased by Jean-Philippe Janoueix in 1997. At the time of the purchase, the estate and vineyards were in poor condition, as the previous owner had abandoned the vineyards. At first, Jean Philippe Janoueix wanted to sell the wines under the original name of Chateau Mouton.

A lawsuit was filed by Chateau Mouton Rothschild and the property changed its name to Croix Mouton. Starting in 1998, extensive renovations on all the winemaking facilities and work in the vineyards began taking place.

Croix Mouton produces wines intended for pleasure, and excellent while still young. Entirely Merlot driven, they are full bodied and rich in flavour, easy to drink but with finesse and a stunning display of fresh red fruit on the palate. After the release of its first vintage, Château Croix Mouton was very quickly recognised by Bordeaux wine experts as being excellent value for money. The ‘M’ on Château Croix Mouton’s label is special. It changes shape and colour each year to reflect the personality of each vintage.

Chateau Croix Mouton is the perfect example of a forward styled, easy to like, crowd pleasing Bordeaux wine that is best enjoyed in its first few years of life to get the most from its ripe fruit and charm. Croix Mouton produces wines intended for pleasure.

The Chateau Croix Moutonis a blend of approximately 97% Merlot, 2,5% Cabernet Franc and 0,5% Petit Verdot.

92+  Points Tastingbook

Precise and significant depth. It's an enormously sedutive and attractive effort filled up with the perfectly ripe blackberries and sweet tannin. Fine structure and subtle fruity smooth and lingering finish. Probably the best Croix Mouton ever produced.

90 Points Decanter

Bit of a stalky nose as first, but then good concentration of blackcurrant and dark bramble fruit on the palate. Nice density and a soft, succulent sweetness to this.

A touch of oak-spice edging gives the tannins a little rusticity, but there is a good core and I like the high-toned cherry fruit. Good drive.
