Los Vascos Trio Domaines Barons de Rothschild, owners of First Growth Chateau Lafite Rothschild, took over the Los Vascos estate in 1988, choosing Los Vascos because of its location near the ocean and its exceptional soil. Along with ideal weather conditions, Los Vascos benefits from intense exposure to the sun, adequate water sources, semi-arid soils and little risk of frost. At an average of 410 feet above sea level and at just 24 miles from the Pacific Ocean, the microclimate of Los Vascos has everything to produce fine wines.
2019 Los Vascos Cromas Carmenere Gran Reserva Intense color tinged with purple. On the nose, the wine reveals fruit aromas such as blackberry, plum and black cherry that gradually evolve with notes of white pepper and herbaceous notes characteristic of this grape variety. On the palate, the tannins are soft, silky with a pleasant balance between density and acidity. James Suckling 93 points "Dark berries with sweet-tobacco and flower-stem undertones. Full-bodied with a tight, juicy and rather tannic palate. Flavorful finish. Just a hint of chocolate and cedar at the end. A more muscular style of carmenere. Better in a year or two, but already excellent." Vinous 91 points "The 2019 Carménère Cromas Gran Reserva is the first vintage for this wine from Peralillo, Colchagua, which was 50% aged in French barrels. Intense purple in the glass. The wood floats over blackberry and raspberry aromas accompanied by roasted red pepper and fruit jam. Ample and creamy on the palate, it delivers a satisfying, flavorful flow with a big, sugary but not overly sweet finish. Initially the nose presents scents of fresh strawberry, red cherry, gooseberry and blue flowers. Then subtle notes of bay, tobacco, caramel and graphite emerge. On the palate, the wine is generous with soft yet lively tannins, leading into a long, lingering finish. James Suckling 92 An attractive cabernet sauvignon with blackcurrant, tobacco and some spice. It’s medium-bodied with round tannins and a flavorful finish. Very typical for a cab. 85% cabernet, 10% syrah and 5% carmenere. Delicious now. Vinous 91 The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Cromas Gran Reserva is the first vintage for a wine that is also 10% Syrah and 5% Carménère from Peralillo, Colchagua, and half aged in French barrels. Garnet red with violet flecks. The nose begins with black pepper and black currant, followed by ripe cherry and plum notes, along with a hint of bay leaf. Creamy in the mouth with accomplished, ample and polished tannins that retain their grip, this is a potent red with long-lasting flavor. Drinking window: 2022 - 2028 Wilfred Wong 91 The 2018 Los Vascos Cromas Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon is well-balanced and ready for the dinner table.
