2018 Bodegas Caro Amancaya Malbec-Cabernet Sauvignon We tasted this wine at a staff tasting and all of us agreed it was a wonderful wine. A good full red with aromas of red plum, redcurrant, mocha, leather, tobacco leaf and spices, plus a suggestion of nutty oak. Smooth sweet, fine-grained wine with a fleshy richness and just enough red-fruit-and-spice lift to maintain freshness. This shows a depth of fruit and balance. Hints of sweetness in the center palate. Full to medium body, balanced and refined. Winemakers notes The robe is deep ruby in color. The nose is complex with aromas of cocoa, red fruits and figs layered with cinnamon and a touch of smokiness. The palate unveils seductive aromas of black fruit with very well-integrated oak. This wine has great balance and an exceptional freshness. Amancaya 2018 is pleasant to drink now and offer great aging potential. Blend: 70% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon 94 points James Suckling This shows blackberry, tobacco, coffee and iodine aromas and flavors. Medium to full body. Polished, yet happily dense with creamy tannins and a long, savory finish. So drinkable now, but will improve with age. 2/2020
91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The 2018 Amancaya, a blend of 70% Malbec and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, aims to combine the fruit and freshness of Malbec with the power and complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon. It was partly matured in oak barrels and keeps a fruit-driven and ripe profile with a soft palate with very fine tannins. 3/2021 BACKGROUND The success of the first vintages of CARO encouraged Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and the Catena family to create another premium wine, this time a Malbec dominated cuvée, that would nevertheless be a balance between the Bordeaux and Argentine styles. To celebrate its Andean origin, the wine was named Amancaya, after the mountain flower which grows in the Andes.
