2018 Chateau De Pitray Castillon, Cotes De Bordeaux

Vine pruning, timber pulling, bending, clamping and lifting, sorting of grapes … All this careful process is carried out by hand in full respect of the vines so that they offer between the end of September and the beginning of October, during the long awaited harvest, beautiful fruit suitable for vinification.

No herbicide is used to preserve environment.

After filling the vats equipped with temperature control, during the cold maceration, the juice develops complex aromas. Then, the vats are gently warmed to awaken the indigenous yeasts and launch the alcoholic fermentation.

This grand chateau on its hillside surveys a 150-acre vineyard. The top wine from the estate, this is mainly wood aged, giving polish as well as perfumed black-currant fruitiness. With its ripe tannins, the wine will easily age.

Well textured, velvety fruits sit on a firm and fresh palate. This is good quality, stretching out in the mouth with tannins that are fully supportive of the project, not getting in the way but cheerleading as the fruit takes its first steps. There is so much to enjoy in the smaller appellations this year.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Pitray features bright, expressive wild blueberries, black raspberries and warm plums scents with hints of spice cake and potpourri. Full-bodied, the palate is laden with juicy blue and black fruits, framed by plush tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with beautiful purity.

A juicy, flavorful red that is delicious now, offering plum, chocolate and berry aromas and flavors. Medium body, firm tannins and a savory finish. Nice acidity, too. Drink or hold.

Modest in scope but nicely rendered, with a mineral edge running amidst damson plum and red currant fruit. Light-handed toast allows the finish to have a pure, unadorned feel. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Drink now through 2024.

2018 Clos Du Roy Fronsac

A blend of 90% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Clos du Roy is a family owned 22-hectare wine estate whose wines fully express the richness and the complexity of the greatest Fronsac vines. The first proper bottling in Château Clos du Roy was in 1970. Beforehand, the vine of this small wine estate was sold as bulk wine to wine trading companies. Clos du Roy quickly gained some fame and ranked among the high quality Fronsac wines.

The 2018 Clos du Roy is made up of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Deep garnet-purple colored, it delivers profound baked plums, boysenberry and cassis notes with touches of chocolate box, underbrush and truffles. Medium to full-bodied and packed with generous black fruits, it has a velvety texture and lively line, finishing savory.

Very solid Fronsac with currant, chocolate and walnut character. Medium body. Firm tannins.

 The 2018 Clos du Roy is a real pleasure to taste. Rich and flamboyant, the 2018 possesses tremendous depth as well as character. Succulent red fruit, blood orange, mint, spice, leather and new oak all mesh together. Readers will find a Fronsac of real substance and power. The 2018 is impressive. I won't be at all surprised if it ages well.
