Orange Wines The Other White Wine

Orange Wines: The New Trend

They say that the best things come in threes, and that has undoubtedly been the case for still wine lists for some time. Red, white or rosé, Sir? But there’s a new kid on the block, a wine that has all the trendiest tongues wagging: orange wine.

Orange wine is cropping up on the wine lists of the hottest bars and restaurants on the planet. Just a few years ago, the Ritz declared it would start selling a orange wine by the glass; and it shortly followed with five more for its ‘by-the-bottle’ list.

What is Orange wine you ask? Orange wine, also known as skin-contact white wine, skin-fermented white wine, or amber wine, is a type of wine made from white wine grapes where the grape skins are not removed, as in typical white wine production, and stay in contact with the juice for days or even months.

Orange wines are generally considered to be “natural wines,” usually grown organically or Biodynamically, produced with minimal intervention. Most orange winemakers use only native yeast (no inoculation) and little or no additives such as sulfites. Orange wines also tend to be lower in alcohol and lighter in body.

That being said, here are two of the staffs favorite Orange Wines

2019 Tonnino Ramato Pinot Grigio

Pinot Grigio juice remains in contact with the grape skins for 8-10 hours at 41° F before being separated. It is fermented in stainless steel tanks for 15 days between 54-57° F. The wine is then matured in stainless steel tanks for 2 months prior to being bottled. Intense and aromatic, characterized by notes of exotic fruits and rose petals. An enjoyable wine that is dry, fresh and lively.

Enjoy this skin-contact Pinot Grigio with light appetizers, crustaceans, raw fish and risotto dishes. Should be served between 46-50° F.

2020 Vichingo Vermentino Macerato Sulle Bucce

From the little certified organic estate/winery of Anna Maria Cruciata in Maremma. Fermented in tank with its native yeast and foot tread the first two days to macerate the estate-grown vermentino.
Its juice sat on the skins for a week with no punch downs, only a simple daily stirring in tank. Skins were
removed after a week and the wine was left to settle in tank. Zero sulfur additions.

Mixed Case Price $20.69 Per Bottle
