Gold Medal & 94 point wine for less than $10, when bought by the case!
" The California State Fair has been recognizing the best wines California has to offer for more than 150 years. At the 2010 Fair the 2009 Cartlidge & Browne Chardonnay, received a Gold Medal and 94 Points.

This Chardonnay has always been one of our favorite. It has always been one of elegance as opposed to power. The wine's aromas show off its Carneros character right up front with fresh, assertive flavors, a light creamy note and a touch of sweet oak. The wine is bright, but with plenty of stuffing and dimension, and an especially long, finesseful finish. This is one of the better 90+ Chardonnays to come around in awhile and its restraint makes it perfect for the hot summer."

Near Perfection!
..... 99 points too!
"This is nearly perfect, a massive, monumental wine whose sheer power is matched only by its grace and refinement. The flavors of blackberries, cassis, dark chocolate, buttered toast and cedar flood the mouth, tightly controlled by firm tannins and good acidity. Decant for several hours if you open it now, but better to give it 6-10 years in the bottle. Cellar Selection."

My first clue was Ted buying a bunch of this.......
"The Bordeaux market has become out of reach for many of us. For example if you'd like a case of 2009 Chateau Lafite Rothschild it'll cost you more than a Honda! Then I'm noticing that Ted's buying a bunch of this. Now, Ted's hard to please and he buys expensive wine because we pay him so well. He brings me a glass to try and I'm quite surprised at just how good it is. This is Bordeaux, this is Margaux, it's rich and balanced and I guarantee you if you taste it blind you'll guess twice the price."

".....It's like Predator laser beams running down your palate....."
Christian places an order for a client for some of the Ludi Neiss Riesling Risling Trocken Pfalz 2009...a small grower in the Pfalz making minuscule quantities of breathtakingly terroir driven Riesling at sick prices...And a conversation ensues last night...

Greg Reeves, T. Edwards' German & Italian Buyer: "What did you think of the Neiss?"

Christian Troy, Fine Wine Consultant, T. Edwards: "Dude, that wine is the sh&t. It's like Predator laser beams running down your palate. I plan on making it my workhorse German recommendation....for $20bt....you can't beat that quality...Great pick up!..."

Greg: "Cool...really appreciate your opinion!"

Christian: "Offering coming tomorrow on it...it's THE wine for right now and the heat...Curious, his upper level stuff....Donnhoff level?"

Greg: "I can get it....just have to get his other stuff out there... And yes it's crazy good dry riesling."

Christian: "Very cool. Thanks man."

"So, we read this exchange and trusting Christian like we do, we bite and order the wine. It got my curiosity aroused!

Any one wanna bet this will get a great score and then become impossible to get?

"2007 Coudoulet de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone....the red one...maybe the best Coudoulet they have made...just loaded and so very pure and balanced...the essence of a Provencal open air market bottled as wine......should keep for a decade if well stored, but irresistible now...."

39 bottles open - first one finished!
"Every year I throw a Summer Party. Lots of wine friends & chef's join us - and this year we did it on the 4th of July... (Hey, free fireworks!!!)

Throughout the day we opened 39 bottles of wine (and 45 thirsty guests came by) - wines from all over the world - a double magnum (3 Liter) of 99 vintage Gaston Chiquet Blanc de Blanc Champagne - a magnum of a killer St. Emilion: Tertre Routebouef - several everyday bottles and several expensive bottles... and yet - the first bottle to be put on the mantelpiece (where all the empty bottles got placed as the day wore on...) was a 2005 Bordeaux from Chateau Vignol.

To me, the first bottle retired is a big deal... it means it was really good and people finished it off fast. And it show's it was drinking really well... even among wines 5 to 10 times it's price!

The 2005 Chateau Vignol, Grand vin de Bordeaux was drinking beautifully with it's bright cherry fruit and gorgeous fruit-filled, thanks to the 2005 vintage, dense and satisfyingly medium level of tannins that made it drink so well. You'd taste it and proclaim "That's Good... Really Good!"

There are a lot of 2005 values that have come thru the doors here at Pop's in the last two years - but I think this may be the best example of one that drinks great right now. Yes you can put it away and see how it improves... but it's a great drinker now.... and so.... Why wait?!?!

And at less than $10 a bottle - it's a steal!

Surprisingly, we still have a number of 2005 Bordeaux's on the shelves under $25... a good category to have good stock of as we move to the Fall and have all the hype in the marketplace about how great the 2009's are going to be. For me, I'm cleaning up on the less expensive 2005's.
