"An
incredible buy at a great price!"
"Every year, about this time - when the weather starts to show
hints that Winter has gone Kaput, wine drinkers search out vibrant crisp
whites. Sauvignon Blanc is the grape of choice for most - and no one makes a
better, more versatile Sauvignon Blanc than the French do in the village of
"Sancerre" in the Loire Valley France.
Last week I got to sample a number of Sancerre's, red and white (yes, they
make red Sancerre's from the Pinot Noir grape but very few stores carry any
- we don't currently have one - but I did find a great one in case any one
is interested, just email me.)
There are light and simple Sancerre's (often from grapes purchased from
multiple sources) and there are more intense, mineral driven Sancerre's
(from land owners "RECOLTANTS" who grow the grapes, own the land, care for
the grapes every step of the way through to bottling it.) These special
bottles are usually way over $25 a bottle.
Recoltant is the french term for owning the land from which the wine was
produced - and it's always great to see it on the label.
As is usual, there was one white Sancerre that stood out from the crowd,
2008 Domaine Sylvain Leredde, Sancerre, The Leredde Sancerre stood out to me
with an outstanding complex perfume of flowers, slate and minerals with an
irresistible refreshing-ness from the balanced acidity and finishes with a
wonderful rocky aftertaste that Announces to the world - it's SPRING!
And this Sancerre is under $20(by the case) - ah, the good old days are
returning... (very few Sancerre's are under $20 these days due to the Euro/$
exchange rate - and even fewer that are under $20 are worth mentioning.)
But this is definitely worth mentioning.
So, enjoy the Spring weather and crack a high quality bottle of Sancerre at
an affordable price - these drink well now and well into the
Summertime....."

purple-colored. It offers a more expressive nose and riper, sweeter fruit on
the palate. The wine has excellent balance and length. Drink it over the
next 5-7 years." ($30)

"
insanely drinking white wine....."
"Charm the palate, and please the Crowd, with this INSANELY
DRINKING WHITE WINE!! “Whereas so many white wines from the world fall short
to satisfy our white wine senses, I simply glance at the label below and
realize, THIS LABEL HAS GOT WHAT I DRIBBLE FOR…"
So after tasting the 2008 Lugana D.O.C. Tenuta Maiolo, and contacting our
supplier, they've offered a RIDICULOS DEAL for this beautiful white wine. I
have tasted, it's special. Some places sell it for @ $20.00 a bottle, while
I feel it drinks even higher!
The "Lugana DOC" wine arises from the old vine variety "Trebbiano di Lugana",
grown in layered clay soils, mostly calcareous, rich in mineral salts. Only
these soils give this wine its features of extreme freshness and sapidity.
white wine fermentation technique, "in bianco", is used to separate the must
from the solids by applying light pressure and careful control of
fermentation temperature. This preserves the exceptionally delicate almond-
and white peach-like varietal aromas. Its colour is light straw yellow, with
greenish glares. Its taste is dry, tending to sapid."
This new arrival, fresh from the shores of Lago di Garda, offers the best
characteristics of Trebbiano I've tasted....and knowingly, the price is
better through Pop's!! Buy a case, and please the Summer crowds who will
only mimic my notes of yellow peach in the background, light-fruit, crispy
overtones, and overly refreshing white almond and apple.. A perfect choice
for grilled, fresh water fish and Risotti."

"Perhaps
the Best Italian Rose I've Ever Had!!"
.....while yesterday, Antonio Galloni of the Wine Advocate
confirmed my notes of taste, and awarded the 2009 TerraDora Aglianico
Rosanovae Rose the HIGESHT SCORE of all rosés reviewed, while being the
least EXPENSIVE too!
"The 2009 Rosanovae Rose (Aglianico) is one of the most interesting rosés
I tasted this year. Dried roses, berries, spices, minerals and licorice are
some of the notes that emerge from this ethereal, deceptively medium-bodied
wine. Aglianico is best-known as the grape used for Taurasi, one of Italy’s
most powerful reds, but here it shows great promise as a unique, totally
beguiling rosé."
90 points, The Wine Advocate, erobertpparker.com, May 2010.
"Aglianico is the most famous grape in the southern regions of Italy.
Together with Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, it is considered one of the three
noble grape varieties in Italy. It is sometimes called the Barolo of the
South. One thing is certain – Aglianico is on the move and the numbers are
there. Quality-wise, continuity with tradition is still important, but over
the past ten years the small, more innovative estates have been
experimenting with new vineyard management and more modern styles of wine.
Many, like me, are convinced that Aglianico has the appeal and structure to
continue as a monovarietal...while today, we offer you the their inaugural
vintage of Rose, by TerraDora Di Paolo (our favorite Campanian producer)
Like its white (Falanghina) and red siblings, this Campanian Rose is
spectacular; a salmon pink hue, with ripe strawberry, cherry, licorice, and
marvelous minerality. A wonderful aperitif, or perhaps enjoy the aromas of
dried fruits and fresh almonds alone, or in the company of friends among the
wonderful dishes of fresh lobster and sausage broccoli rabe; It is a rose of
Aglianico, the kingpin of the region, and one of the best grapes of the
country."

"Light notes of tobacco, raspberries, sandy soil and American oak
greet the nose. On the palate this is smooth and almost seamless with nice
zesty red berry fruits up front buoyed by vibrant acidity. The tannins kick
in on the mid-palate giving this some mouthgrab. Nice flavors of black
olive, dried herb and dried spices add nice complexity and linger on the
finish, which shows somewhat darker fruit and a touch of vanilla. This is a
lovely wine, well-balanced, richly flavored yet friendly. A perfect wine for
grilled or roasted red meats." ($7.99+)
