"Light in texture and fragrant with floral, berry and beet
aromas, this plays its fresh flavors against refined tannins, lingering
effortlessly. Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2013. From
Australia." ($11)
Wine Spectator's editors have selected this wine as the best buy of the

".....good value and honest pleasure....."
"Inexpensive California Cabs conjure for me an image of sweet,
simple, candied fruitiness, but this solid, gutsy Cabernet turns that image
on its head. From the highly creative “Three Thieves” team, this is a
medium-plus bodied red with a smooth texture, ripe and fine-grained tannin,
and balanced (13.9%) alcohol. Its aromas and flavors suggest ripe, dark
fruits with a refreshing eucalyptus/ herbal note. This is by no means a
refined or sophisticated Cab: If California made “country wines,” this would
be that -- good value and honest pleasure." ($15)

".....red cherry and berry fruit....."
"For years I’ve been openly dismissive not only of Beaujolais Nouveau, but
also of most other bottlings from Beaujolais, which are frequently grapey
and sugary in an overt way. However, fairness requires recognition of
exceptions to the rule, and this bottling is one of them. It shows red
cherry and berry fruit with a bit of brightness and a sweetness that seems
natural and fruity rather than confected. Light but flavorful, it is very
pleasant and very useful with light meats or poultry."

Do you like dry white wines?
"I do. Do you gag when you buy a cheap one and wish you hadn't been so cheap
on that bottle? Happens to me a lot. I have a lot of problems with whites
under $10 a bottle. Italian Pinot Grigios' are characterless under $10.
Pinot Gris from Oregon or Alsace are not under $10. I'm always searching for
an inexpensive white to sip on at the beginning of the night, to cook with
too. Always cook with a wine you like to drink. I do. So this is what I've
found that get's the job done...
The 2009 Manta has become a staple in my fridge. For $6 it has a harmonious,
dry, simple, refreshing taste like a French white Bordeaux without the white
Bordeaux price-tag! No cat's pee, no sweet fake flavor. Harmonious and
simple.
Sauvignon Blanc's from Chile are starting to ditch the American
over-extraction style and to ditch the New Zealand cats-pee style and
creating their own image. The Manta is a fine example."

"Has fabulous aromas of blackberry, black cherry and raspberry. Full-bodied,
with wonderfully integrated tannins, fresh mushrooms and milk chocolate.
Chewy in the end. We will see if this is better than the 2001 with age. Best
after 2010." ($75)

"Deep, dark currents of raspberry, chocolate and plums flow through
this splendid wine, with a wash of fine, grainy tannins riding on a long,
commanding finish. Intensity and power are beautifully balanced by finesse."
