Great wine doesn't have to cost a lot!

The Cab that stole Xmas!
"A Merry Christmas was had at our place with a huge selection of wines from price-points of $10 up to $500 (1999 Chateau Latour was mighty nice... but NOT the wine of the night.)

The Wine of the Night had to be judged by everyone in the room, 10 of us total. Cabernet was the unanimous winner this year but the winning wine was a bit of a surprise.

Among the crowd were Caymus, Stag's Leap, Quilt, and a Silver Oak 1996 that was perfectly mature albeit the cork disintegrated. No big deal, we filtered it through a coffee filter...

The best wine of the night...

It has a powerful, mineral-drenched energy and very savory overtones. Big dark fruit that's heavy but not overweight. Super-ripe dark black fruit, raspberry jam, smoke, tobacco, incense, gravel, asphalt and licorice are all pushed forward.

The bags revealed....

#1 Crown Favorite: 2014 Beringer Knight's Valley Cabernet!!

The Knights Valley has tannins that are clearly present with a richness and intensity rarely found under $30 a bottle.

I love that this is under $25 by the case!! I've been drinking this Knight's Valley Cabernet every vintage since the illustrious 1994 vintage and it rarely disappoints.

Further research shows that James Suckling awarded this 93 points!!!"

93 points. JamesSuckling.com
"Firm and fresh cabernet with excellent currant and berry character, firm and silky tannins and a long and flavorful finish. A wine that shows definition and subtle complexity with lots of stone, violet and fruit character at the finish. Like the balance better than the reserve Knights Valley. Beautiful now but better in 2020." (93 pts.)

93 Points and under $25 by the case and the Winner of Ted's Xmas Cabernet Challenge."

Here's my preview on my Champagne discovery of the year....
"Domaine Dauby, Premier Cru Brut Champagne

I highly recommend you grab a few bottles of this Champagne.

I had a bottle recently and it's delicious for a number of reasons:

Delicious!
Great Value!
Organic!
Grower Champagne!
Premier Cru!
$38!
Minerality!
Long Finish!
Could be $60.

Better than that... it also tasted great over 5 days being open. Once it loses it's fizz, it drinks like a Meursault on the $50-60 level. Stony minerality, complex taste and really beautiful. I was shocked that it tasted so great after 4 days. It's Organic so apparently those wines stay good for a lot longer than other wines.

Simply put... Premier Cru White Burgundy with bubbles!

A Grower Champagne, meaning they grow the grapes, farm the vineyard and live on the property.

It will keep for 4 days after opening, as most Organic wines do...

The elegance of Chardonnay (40%) provides the perfect balance in this predominantly Pinot Noir (60%) blend which, more than any other, represents the House of Dauby.

This traditional champagne comes from our Premier Cru vineyards in Mutigny and Mareuil-sur-A. It takes its name from the reserve wines aged in large oak barrels and, with its range of fruity and mineral flavours, it makes the perfect aperitif.

This is a champagne for celebrations, a champagne that everyone will enjoy. Excellent as a cocktail and perfect to accompany a seafood platter.

Merry Christmas & A Happy, Healthy New Year!

Cheers!

Thanks for reading my emails all year long."
