Great wine doesn't have to cost a lot!

I Remember when Prisoner tasted this great… a long time ago.
"Step aside Prisoner... 94 Point 2013 "Bootleg" has arrived.  Another funny label - An X-Ray of a Briefcase.

Extremely Full Bodied. Enormous.

The 2013 Bootleg is a deep, dark, intense wine full of black fruit aromas, baking spices and espresso. On the palate it exhibits flavors of blackberry compote, licorice and mocha. Creamy, round textures that give it a long, lingering finish.

Blend: 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Petite Sirah, 21% Zinfandel, 12% Syrah 12% Merlot, 3% Malbec, and 3% Petit Verdot."

94 Points, Wine Advocate
“The 2013 Proprietary Red from Bootleg is a major sleeper of not only the vintage, but in its entire concept. There are just over 8,000 cases of this wine, which has been culled from KJ vineyards on Atlas Peak, Oakville, Mt. Veeder, Rutherford and Spring Mountain. The wine is a blend of 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Petite Sirah, 21% Zinfandel, 12% Merlot, and the rest Malbec and Petit Verdot. That’s like throwing in the entire kitchen sink, but the result is a stunningly delicious, complex, big-time, sexy style of wine with a deep, opaque purple color, a beautiful nose of blackberries and blueberries, with some lavender Provençal herbs, licorice and a touch of espresso. The wine has a fabulous texture, a plush, full-bodied mouthfeel, and beautiful purity and depth. It’s something that could only be made in California, given the blend, but it is off-the-charts in terms of its hedonistic appeal. At the same time, it is complex enough to satisfy the intellectual senses as well. Drink it over the next 5-6 years. A big-time winner.”

Ted's pick... 94 Rated Shea Vyd St. Innocent Oregon Pinot Noir under $35!
"Here’s a great deal AND An Outstanding Pinot Noir from Oregon! Single vineyard Pinot Noir’s from great sites like “Shea Vineyard” often command $60-75 a bottle.

With that in mind… The 2013 St. Innocent “Shea Vineyard” is over 50% OFF!

We all love a great Pinot Noir… especially if it’s a Great deal! Shea Vineyard Pinot Noir’s under $35 are very rare!

The mountain ridges surrounding the district form a horseshoe shape, and most of the vineyards are located on south-facing slopes. The AVA includes only land between 200 feet (61 m) and 1,000 feet (305 m) above sea level where marine sediments are some of the oldest soils in the Willamette Valley and create unique conditions for viticulture.

The 2013 St. Innocent Shea Vineyard Pinot Noir nose is dense with wild black cherry, black raspberry, cassis, dark rose, cola, and dark licorice aromas.

I love Pinot’s like this, such depth of flavors.

The mouth is equally huge with dark, concentrated fruits, white pepper, dense floral, and roasted dark sweet spices.

An the press likes it too…

94 Points, Wine Enthusiast
"Dark, dense and detailed, this outstanding wine seamlessly layers wild berries, cedar, sandalwood and sassafras. It’s smooth and seductive, powerful and polished, with thick, ripe and fulsome tannins. Editors' Choice."

Ted's pick... Vibrant, mouthwatering Chenin Blanc - eye opening great chenin!
"France's Loire region is the source of some of the most enjoyable, varied, and fascinating wines on the planet. Sancerre, Pouilly Fume, Chinon and Vouvray all exist in the Loire. Many of its most impressive whites come from Vouvray and are made from Chenin Blanc.

The 2015 Vouvray “Spring” Domaine Vincent & Tania Careme at less than $20 a bottle is Outstanding value!

Crisp and fruity this crowd pleasing, yet complex Vouvray exhibits hints of apple and citrus. A vivacious acidity merges with an abundance of minerality keeping the wine beautifully balanced.

Vincent is passionate about Chenin Blanc – he works with no other variety – making both sparkling and still wines. As one of the rare producers in Vouvray using organic practices, he is equally passionate about how it is grown.

The 2015 Vouvray “Spring” comes from grapes with an average vine age of 30 years, grown in soil comprised of limestone, clay, and flint. The result of these efforts is redolent of melon and green apple, with white currant, quince, talc, and wet stone on the palate. A vibrant wine for dinner this evening, a seafood dish like linguine with white clam sauce would be an ideal pairing. However, due to Chenin's affinity for aging, depositing a bottle in the cellar could lead to an enormous reward in a few years’ time.

The press is starting to notice too…

"Friendly in feel, with layers of quince, papaya and creamed pear gliding through, backed by a lightly toasted almond hint on the finish. Shows good length and range. Drink now through 2019.

Highly recommended!!!

Ted's pick... The perfect wine for 3 trays of Paella!
"Visiting Alicante Spain in April, we had on the itinerary visiting “Restaurant Paco Gandia” and the tour book said quite simply: “The Best Paella in Spain!” I was a little unsure till we walked in and saw the Michelin star on the door…

Using Old Vine Rootstock from nearby vineyards to fuel the flames under the tray, they cooked in the kitchen with powerful fans, the most exquisite Paella… and the wine that went “Perfectly with this exotic Paella”…  2014 Tarima Hill Estate Bottled Old Vine Monastrell, Alicante, Spain

The 2014 Tarima Hill Estate Bottled Old Vine Monastrell exhibits deep garnet color with flashes of violet and a bouquet of dark red cherries and leather. On the palate the wine achieves its full potential, offering an array of black berries, plums and licorice with a powerful and persistent finish.

92 points, The Wine Advocate
“Lastly, the 2014 Tarima Hill, from Alicante, is also 100% Mourvèdre aged 20 months in French oak and from the oldest vines of the estate, planted 1935-1975. They are also relatively high elevation, at 2,000 to 2,400 feet above sea level. This wine shows wonderful, pure aromatics of blueberry, black raspberries, chalk and spring flowers. The wine has beautiful, full-bodied texture, impressive ripeness and purity and length. The minerality is present, and the wine a heck of a value.”

If you get to Alicante, 2 hours south of Barcelona, Definitely stop by Paco Gandia!

Pronouncing this wine will give you a toothache.
"Luckily, the wine is fantastic! It always is great from Txomin Etxaniz which has been making wine for close to 1000 years in the Basque region in Spain. They make a delicious wine called Tkaolina (Chock-O-Leena) of which there’s a White and a Rose.

Today’s steal of a deal is the Rose! Gorgeous Rose!

Typically priced North of $20 a bottle, you’d most likely find it in Fine Restaurants. Today we have a fantastic price on it that’ll make you want to buy a case or more.

Pale, bright pink. High-pitched aromas of strawberry, lime, white flowers and minerals. Tangy and sharply defined, offering crackling red berry and citrus fruit flavors and a hint of white pepper. The mineral note comes back strong on the finish, which shows impressive clarity and length.

91 points, Vinous Media, May, 2017
"Pale limpid pink. Bright, mineral-tinged strawberry, tangerine and quinine scents are complemented by a suave floral overtone. Juicy, focused and light on its feet, offering intense red berry and citrus fruit flavors and a hint of tarragon. Closes on an emphatic mineral note, showing strong persistence and nervy cut." -Josh Raynolds

Made from Hondarrabi Beltza (a red grape) and Hondarrabi Txuri. The color is a pale light salmon, and the wine (which is never racked) includes a good measure of CO2 (which is part of the typicity of wines from this area.)

91 Points – Was $22.99 – now under $10!!!!!!!!

Outstanding deal for this Rose!

Here’s another phenomenal “Gran Selezione” Chianti Classico.
"Castello di Ama is one of a small number of trend-setters in the Chianti region. If ever in Tuscany, a visit is highly recommended. One hour from Florence!

Ama makes some spectacular wines from their own ESTATE vineyards. Beautiful Sangiovese/Merlot Rosato, A spectacular Chardonnay, the whole range of Chianti Classico’s and several high end ($150+) Gran Selezione Chianti’s.

Today’s featured wine…

2013 Castello di Ama, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo

95 points, James Suckling
"Tight and super silky with a gorgeous density and precision that gives great polish to the tannins. Makes them almost dusty. Lots of subtle dark berry, mineral and spice. Drink or hold.

94 points, Wine Spectator
"There's purity to the cherry, strawberry, floral and spice aromas and flavors is this red, which is firmly structured yet elegant and graceful, with sweet fruit matching the dusty tannins on the lingering finish. Best from 2018 through 2028. 180 cases imported.-BS

The 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo is a plush, open-knit wine with a lot going on! Sweet tobacco, earthiness, smoke, leather and menthol wrap around a core of dark dense fruit with a persistent tannin structure. The 2013 should drink well for the next decade-plus.
