Great Growths
"One of the handful of candidates for wine of the vintage is the 2006 Ausone.
In fact, while tasting it, I was thinking, is there any estate in Bordeaux
that, since 1998, has made as many legendary wines as proprietor Alain
Vauthier has at his beloved Ausone? Boasting an inky/blue/purple color as
well as an extraordinary, precise bouquet of minerals, flowers, blueberry
liqueur, and black currants, this wine possesses fabulous fruit and great
intensity, but what makes it so special is its precision, focus, and almost
ethereal lightness despite substantial flavor intensity and depth. It is a
ballerina with density and power. The abundant noticeable tannin is sweet
and, not surprisingly, very finely grained. It should be cellared for a
decade, and consumed over the following half century."

"The
brilliant 2006 Cheval Blanc performed better from bottle than from barrel. A
blend of equal parts Cabernet Franc and Merlot grown in a superb vineyard
site facing La Conseillante and l’Evangile at the very edge of the sandy,
gravelly soils of St.-Emilion, it boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well
as a sweet perfume of menthol, charcoal, boysenberries, black currants, and
hints of cocoa and caramel. Lush, textured, and opulent with superb purity,
medium to full body, savory flavors, and sweet, sexy tannins, this stunning
Cheval Blanc may be even better than the 2005. Anticipated maturity:
2012-2030."

"The 2006 Haut-Brion performed even better from bottle than it did from
barrel. Sixty-four percent of the production went into this wine, and while
it displays the vintage’s powerful tannins and structure, it possesses
superb concentration, and the minerality/scorched earth notes of a great
Haut-Brion. Medium to full-bodied, with perhaps not quite the fleshiness of
the 2005 or 2000, it is built more along the lines of the 1998 and 1996. It
is a brilliant effort displaying sensational purity, texture, and length
that should be exceptionally long-lived. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2035."

"One
of the fabulous surprises, although I had suggested last year that it could
jump in quality, of my tastings, the 2006 Lafite Rothschild is a great,
great wine made from a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, and 2%
Petit Verdot. When I tasted it from barrel, it reminded me of their
successful 1988, but it is dramatically superior to that vintage. Frankly,
it may turn out to be as good as the 2005, which in all of Bordeaux is a far
greater vintage than 2006. Lafite’s severe selection process (42% made it
into the grand vin) resulted in a full-bodied wine boasting an extraordinary
perfume of charcoal, truffles, lead pencil shavings, and sensationally
sweet, ripe black currant and cedar notes. A wine of extraordinary
intensity, texture, and depth with silky tannins as well as awesome
concentration, this has turned out to be a remarkable Lafite Rothschild that
should be drinkable much earlier than the 2005, but age for three decades.
Anticipated maturity: 2014-2035+."

"The
2006 Latour performed even better from bottle than from barrel. Only 38% of
the production (10,000 cases) made it into the grand vin, a blend of 86%
Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest primarily Merlot and a small amount of
Cabernet Franc. From barrel, I thought it was a modern day version of the
1996 or 1986, and certainly the 1996 comparison still holds. I thought it
was somewhat austere from barrel, but that is no longer an issue. This is a
beautifully rich Chateau Latour boasting a dense ruby/purple color, a sweet,
smoky, charcoal, cassis, graphite, and forest floor-scented nose, full body,
an attractive freshness, and sweet, noble tannins. This layered Latour is
one of the vintage's top dozen or so wines. Anticipated maturity:

"A
sensational effort, the 2006 Mouton Rothschild exhibits an opaque purple
color as well as a classic Mouton perfume of creme de cassis, flowers,
blueberries, and only a hint of oak. Dalhuin told me that in whisky
barrel-tasting vintages such as 1989 and 1990, Mouton was aged in
heavily-toasted barrels, and they have backed off to a much lighter toast
for the barrels’ interior. I think this has worked fabulously well with the
cassis quality fruit they get from their Cabernet Sauvignon. The
full-bodied, powerful 2006 possesses extraordinary purity and clarity. A
large-scaled, massive Mouton Rothschild that ranks as one of the top four or
five wines of the vintage, it may turn out to be the longest-lived wine of
the vintage by a landslide. The label will undoubtedly be controversial as a
relative of Sigmund Freud, Lucian Freud, has painted a rather comical Zebra
staring aimlessly at what appears to be a palm tree in the middle of a stark
courtyard. I suppose a psychiatrist could figure out the relationship
between that artwork and wine, but I couldn’t see one. This utterly profound
Mouton will need to sleep for 15+ years before it will reveal any secondary
nuances, but it is a packed and stacked first-growth Pauillac of enormous
potential. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2060+.
Ever since owner Philippine de Rothschild put Philippe Dalhuin in charge at
Mouton in 2004 there has been a dramatic reduction in the amount of wine
produced under the Mouton Rothschild label. The selection process has been
ratcheted up to the level of other first-growths, and that is reflected in
what is clearly the greatest Mouton produced since 1982 and 1986. As I
indicated in my barrel tasting notes, only 44% of the crop made it into the
2006 grand vin, which is the lowest percentage in more than fifty years. The
final blend includes a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (87%) and the
rest Merlot (13%). No Cabernet Franc was utilized in 2006, and purchasers
will have a long wait until this wine reaches full maturity. Keep in mind
that, where well-stored, the 1986 currently tastes like a 4-5 year old wine,
and the 1982 is just beginning to enter early adolescence. If you
extrapolate from that, the 2006 will need at least twenty years to reach a
teen-age status, and probably will not hit its plateau of maturity for three
decades."

"The
exceptional 2006 Cos d’Estournel is composed of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20%
Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot, 55% of the production was utilized. Revealing
superb intensity for a 2006 as well as an inky/blue/purple color, and a
sweet bouquet of blue and black fruits, licorice, graphite, and charcoal,
this full-bodied 2006 possesses high levels of sweet tannin. This wine is
characterized by a freshness and precision that give it a 1996-like
affinity. Enjoy this beautifully concentrated, exceptionally pure,
statuesque Cos d’Estournel over the next 20-25 years. By the way, it was

"The
first vintage under new owner Martin Bouygues, who convinced Jean-Bernard
Delmas to come out of retirement to produce this wine, the 2006 Montrose is
an undeniable success. A blend of approximately two-thirds Cabernet
Sauvignon, one-third Merlot, and a tiny dollop of Petit Verdot, the most
dramatic difference between the 2006, and wines made by the previous
administration is that Jean Delmas produces wines with sweeter, silkier
tannins, although analytically, they are as high as those found in the great
Montrose vintages of the past. The 2006 is extraordinarily elegant and
finesse-styled, but it exhibits stunningly concentrated, sweet blackberry
and cassis fruit with hints of flowers and minerals. Full-bodied with a
savory, expansive mid-palate as well as sweet, noble tannins, this beauty
will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age, and should drink well for 20-25+
years."

Pauillac
"From
the same stable as Mouton Rothschild and d’Armailhac, Clerc Milon, despite
the relatively high percentage of Merlot (44%) combined with 50% Cabernet
Sauvignon and the balance Cabernet Franc, is dense, rich, tannic, and
backward. Surprisingly muscular for this offering, which often exhibits a
more precocious side, it offers up abundant amounts of creme brulee,
chocolate, cedar, and black currants. This full-bodied Pauillac displays
gorgeous purity and depth as well as moderately high tannins in the finish.
Because of its freshness, structure, and density, it is reminiscent of a
1996 Medoc. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2028."

"This
impressive Pauillac is performing even better from bottle than it did from
barrel. Made by the staff at Mouton Rothschild, it is a blend of 64%
Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Merlot and Cabernet Franc. A dense
ruby/purple color is followed by a bouquet of grilled meats, subtle herbs,
coffee, black currants, and a hint of camphor. The sweetness of the tannins,
full-bodied mouthfeel, and stunning length, all in gorgeous symmetry,
suggest this is one of the finest d’Armailhacs yet made. Moreover, it is
still reasonably priced by the standards of this region. Anticipated

"Ducasse has definitely turned up the level of quality over the last 7-8
years. Classic creme de cassis notes intermixed with licorice, spring
flowers, a bit of toast and smoke are all present in this medium to
full-bodied, elegant, yet savory, expansively flavored, deep, silky-textured
wine that has outstanding depth, purity, and a good 20-second finish. This

"While
not at the level of the phenomenal 2005, Grand-Puy-Lacoste has produced
another classic wine with the creme de cassis fruit that I often find in
both Mouton Rothschild and Pontet-Canet, yet both of those vineyards are
closer to the Gironde River. This wine has a pure personality, with the
aforementioned classic creme de cassis notes, medium to full body, beautiful
density, purity, texture, and length. If anything, this recalls a
hypothetical blend of their brilliant 1995 and 1996. Tannins are elevated,
so patience will be required. This was Xavier Borie’s first vintage in his
new state-of-the-art winemaking facility. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2027."

property, while in the Pauillac appellation, seems to be more St.-Julien-like
in most vintages. With silky tannins, its sweet berry-scented nose

"1988
or 1995-ish in style, rather than 1996, which seems to be the vintage
several 2006s recall, this dense purple-colored wine displays sweet notes of
creme de cassis, tobacco leaf, licorice, and some cedar and graphite. The
wine has plenty of structure a la 1995 and a backward, muscular personality,
but beautiful fruit on the attack and alluring purity and a nicely textured

but promising, this is a tannic, masculine style of wine in 2006, with an
inky bluish/purple color as well as aromas of incense, charcoal, smoked
meats, and the classic creme de cassis that one finds in the top Pauillacs.
The aromatics are still retrained, but the wine is full-bodied in the mouth,
tannic, backward, and set for a relatively long life. This is not one of the
profound wines from Pichon Longueville Baron, but it is certainly a
top-flight success for the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2028."

"The
2006 Pichon Lalande, which blows away the 2005, represents a return to the
velvety-textured, rich, sexy style most readers would associate with Pichon
Lalande. This blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon and 36% Merlot no Petit Verdot
was included in the final blend exhibits a dense purple color as well as
abundant aromas of chocolate, coffee, cedar, black currants, and a subtle
touch of smoke, a rich, savory, full-bodied mouthfeel, plump, fleshy fruit,
and a superb finish. This is a 21st century version of the brilliant 1996.
Anticipated maturity: 2013-2030.
One of the major disappointments in 2005 was Pichon Lalande, but the change
in ownership, with the Roederer/Deutz champagne firm taking control in 2006,
resulted in a very severe selection being instituted, only 41% of the
production went into the grand vin."

"The
2006 is a wine to stockpile, especially for those in their thirties and
forties as it needs another decade to reach maturity, after which it should
keep for 30+ years. This vineyard, just south of Mouton Rothschild, has
produced an opaque bluish/purple-colored 2006 with an extraordinarily pure
nose of graphite, charcoal, sweet creme de cassis, and a hint of scorched
earth. Incredible concentration, stunning richness, and a 60-second finish
result in a wine that transcends the vintage as well as this estate’s 1855
classification. This enormously endowed, modern day classic is a legend in
the making. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2050+.
Enormous credit is due proprietor Alfred Tesseron for turning things around
at this estate in 1994, and continuing to produce first-growth level wines.
Pontet-Canet is one of the few bio-dynamically farmed vineyards in the
Medoc, and Tesseron is such a perfectionist in both the vineyard and wine
cellars that his nickname among other bordelais is “Monsieur Bonsai.”

"A
property that seems to be awakening, this St.-Julien leans toward more of a
Margaux style. The attractive earthy, floral, red currant, and raspberry
notes are impressively intense and complex in the aromatics. This dark
ruby/purple-tinged wine displays elegance, finesse, and a beautiful
mouthfeel in a restrained, moderately intense, but still classic style with
sweet tannins. Tobacco, cedar, earth, and red and black fruits are prominent
in both the aromas and the flavors. This wine can be drunk now or cellared

very strong effort from Lagrange in 2006, this estate’s tendency for
including a nearly overwhelming oak component in its wines has been tamed in
this cuvee, resulting in a better-balanced, potentially complex offering. A
deep opaque purple color is followed by aromas of espresso roast, subtle

"Not
surprisingly, Leoville Las Cases has produced another classic, potentially
long-lived wine in 2006. Among the St.-Juliens, it, Ducru Beaucaillou, and
Leoville Barton possess the potential for the greatest longevity.
Interestingly, when I visited this chateau in January, proprietor
Jean-Hubert Delon offered me two samples, one where the cork had been pulled
immediately prior to tasting, and another that had been decanted four hours
earlier. Both were superb, but the wine that had had extended aeration was
clearly the finer offering. The opaque purple-hued 2006- only 40% of the
crop made it into the final blend- exhibits a personality that mimics the
superb 1996. Classic aromas of sweet black raspberries, kirsch, cassis, and
subtle toasty oak are followed by a full-bodied, concentrated wine
displaying moderately high tannin. This cuvee can often resemble a Pauillac
wrapped in the St.-Julien appellation, and the 2006 is no exception. A blend
of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, it
will require significant cellaring before consumption. Anticipated maturity:

produced a dense purple-colored wine with a beautiful set of aromatics
offering a smorgasbord of aromas such as perfumed flowers, incense,

providing advice, Prieure-Lichine has moved to a complete, savory, and for
lack of a better description, broad, lush, sexy style. This has always been
a wine that was drinkable at an early age, but I think they are building

losing the estate’s early appeal. The 2006 is an outstanding wine, with
complex notes of spring flowers, forest floor, sweet black currants, and
earth. Medium to full-bodied, flavorful, without a trace of astringency or
hardness, this is a succulent, fleshy wine to drink over the next 15 or more

consumers outside of Bordeaux are probably far more familiar with the
brilliant white wine made here than their red, but this is an elegant,
Burgundian-styled red that could pass for a grand cru from the Cotes de

leather, burning embers, and tobacco leaf emerge from the complex aromatics.

working his magic at this great vineyard in Leognan. The 2006, a blend of
63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet
Franc, is a revelation of sweet, lush, black raspberry and black currant
fruit intermixed with subtle notes of scorched earth and barbecue spices.
Round, luscious, sexy, and exceptionally complex, the wine is dominated by
that smoky minerality that comes from this area. It is the quintessentially
elegant yet substantial Pessac-Leognan with class, complexity, and
potential. Despite wanting to drink most of the bottle when I was tasting

"A
superb success for the vintage, the 2006 exhibits a deep ruby/purple hue as

camphor, truffles, and a subtle hint of oak. Medium-bodied with a stunningly

haute couture in a glass. Although surprisingly approachable, it won’t hit

It is extraordinary to see what the American proprietor, a banker from

"One
of the vintage's top wines is the 2006 La Mission-Haut-Brion. From bottle,
it reminds me of the 1998, given its structure and backward style. Dense
ruby/purple-colored, it possesses a boatload of tannin, but with coaxing,
tobacco leaf, sweet black currant, burning ember, and blue fruit
characteristics emerge. While thick and full-bodied, the tannins seem more
elevated than I remember from barrel. It is going to be a beauty, but like
many of the top 2006s, considerable patience is required. Only 55% of the
production made it into the grand vin as Jean-Philippe Delmas made a severe
selection. The final blend was 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and
the 2006 has one of the highest natural alcohols ever achieved at La
Mission, averaging around 14.3%, which is astonishingly high for a Graves.

nearly 50-year old vines produces only 4,000 bottles from a blend of 90%
Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The broodingly tannic, backward 2006 is
remarkably concentrated, pure, and deep. It is an amazing tour de force in
winemaking, but like nearly all the Perse 2006s, it is a massively built vin
de garde with no compromises meant for serious connoisseurs and long-term
cellaring. Forget it for 7-8 years, and drink it over the following 25-30."

herbs, sweet black cherry and cassis fruit, licorice, espresso roast,
chocolate, and toast. Full-bodied with superb concentration as well as a

anti-fraud device, which I think will be increasingly employed by many
French estates.

Sauternes
"While no surprise here, this wine,
which will be bottled in 2009, is certainly this estate’s greatest effort
since their 2001. It completely outclasses everything from the appellation,
but even when you’re number one, that’s often hard to do. This light gold
wine offers up a sensational smorgasbord of aromas including huge honeyed
pineapple and other caramelized tropical fruit flavors, massive richness,
and a viscous, unctuous texture with the oak beautifully integrated. The
wine has enough acidity to buttress its full-bodied mouthfeel, but this is
not by any means the sweetest or most alcoholic of the d’Yquems I have
tasted. In fact, in the range of d’Yquems, this is a powerful wine, but it
is one built more on finesse and elegance, a la the 1988. Nevertheless, this
wine will prove to have 50+ years of longevity. The finish, the mid-palate,
the sensation of looking at a skyscraper of Semillon with a small dosage of
Sauvignon, is impressive. Like all of the sweet wines of Barsac and
Sauternes, one can drink this young, but the nuances and complexities really
don’t emerge for at least a decade, especially in the case of a wine such as
this. Bravo!"
